What It Means To Be Set Apart

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

There is a saying that you will never influence the world by trying to be like it.

There is also a saying that states:

"I wasn't made to fit in. I was born to stand out."

And isn't that true about God's people?

Signs you have been chosen by God

Anyone who wants to do great things must be ready to be different. A different person might be set aside by other people. And that can cause worry and a feeling of hopelessness that can be stressful for them. It has been recorded that people who different, despite their challenges; if they keep it, what they do will end up being successful in life.

A different person is seen as unique and will usually wonder why they do things the way they do.

A unique person is set aside from others. They do not behave like others and they stand out in creativity, race, and culture. But the distinctive feature is that they do no do things they way it is done by others.

A group of people can also be unique which is why God set his children apart. There is a calling over your life. And as a child of God, you are called to do great things. Things that will make you the head and not the tail. Things that will prosper you and make you great. God sets you apart so his will for your life will be done.

Abraham and his blessing to be set apart

To be set apart by God means that God has picked and chosen you, especially for his use. God started with Abraham and blessed him by telling him that he will be a great nation and will famous and will be a blessing.

God said he will curse those who cursed Abraham and will bless those who blessed him.

God included a very special part that a lot of people ignore. God told Abraham that all the families in the Earth will be blessed through him. This part for-tells the coming of Jesus Christ and the blessings that will come to everyone who believes in Jesus.

After the death of Abraham, Isaac his son continued to be faithful to God like his father. And God maintained his promises. From Isaac came Jacob: also called Israel. Jacob's children were taken captive by Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. But this did not stop God from setting them apart from the rest of the world. He started by releasing them from bondage and freed them from slavery.

This is seen in Deuteronomy 7:6-9 where Moses spoke to the children of Israel saying:

"You are a people holy to the Lord your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the Earth. It is not because you were more numerous than all the other people that the Lord favored and chose you. For you were the least numerous of people. Rather it is because of his love for you and his faithfulness, to the promise he solemnly vowed to your ancestors, that the Lord brought you out with great power redeeming you from the place of slavery from the power of Pharaoh; king of Egypt. The faithful God who keeps covenant faithfully with those who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations."

This shows that Israel was set apart by God. As he had chosen them for himself because he loved them and they had the right standing with God. When God loves you, he sets you apart and you are to obey him and not to do anything to damage the right standing you have with God. Just like God set Abraham apart (and his descendants), so also he sets you apart. He sets you apart from the ways, thoughts, and attitudes of the world.

Romans 12:2 says:

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of you mind: that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

How to become set apart

The moment you receive his gift of salvation, the moment you are baptized with his spirit and unto his death through his covenant: the moment you are born again you are set apart from the world.

The way the world thinks and does things and that manner of thinking can be in rebellion against God and will conform you to an ungodly pattern. But you are set apart. So you must not be transformed to the ways of the world. You are called to think differently by the renewing of your mind. This is how you are set apart from others.

Psalms 4:3 says:

"The lord set apart the godly for himself. The Lord will answer when I call to him."

God sets people apart for his purpose. He finds holy people and uses them for his purpose. The people God sets apart are those that God can have a relationship with and lead. You have been set apart for God and you belong to him. You are seen and taken as holy by God.

1 Peter 2:9 says:

"But you are a chosen race, a Royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."

You are set apart for God, and this must show in the way you live your life. When God sets you apart, he singles you out for special treatment. This way, you are blessed exclusively by his bidding. And for his pleasure, you have found favor with God when he sets you apart. And his never ending grace will grant you victory all around.

Being set apart does not mean things will go well for you at every point in time. Rather it means even when things are challenging, God will be there with you. The world has no affection or love for Jesus Christ and you will be persecuted just as he was. Because you do agree with the world and its principles. You must ensure that you are steadfast and do no allow yourself to be overcome by the world because Jesus Christ has overcome the world.

When God sets you apart, you do no need to worry about those who set you aside. God is to be your standard. So what other people say or do to yo should not worry you at all.

People do not get to set the standard for what is special or the mindset that you should follow. They do not get to set the standard, because the standard is set by God.

So when people reject you for whatever reason, and you feel like you have been set aside, and you feel hurt, you should bask in the promises of God that sets you apart. And he will be with you to comfort and protect you because you are doing his will. You have received God's faithful love and you are made holy through Christ. This is how to be set apart.

Being set apart from the world in God's covenant

God has made a covenant with you based on this. So you must live your life in a godly way, because he has made you godly. And this is the best way he can have a relationship with you.

Every Christian is called to live a life of obedience to God. But there is also a calling for individual lives. God has called you and he needs you to be a vessel of honor. And he calls you to salvation in Christ.

Romans 8:28 says:

"All things work together for good for those who love God who are called according to his purpose."

The calling of God is deeper than any career or hobby you love. Jesus Christ says in Matthew 11:22:

"Come unto me all ye who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and learn from me, for gentle and humble in heat, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

God can call you into different things. He can all you into doing things related to relationships, jobs, ministries, etc. He can call you into starting something or stopping something. He can call you to go somewhere or stay exactly where you are. There is a calling over your life by by God through Jesus and he invites you to have a relationship with him. All you have to do is hand over your burdens and do things his way, as that is the easy and light way.

The first reason why God calls you is for you to let God love you. God loves you so much, and he wants you to be with him, but sin drives you away from God. And this is why we must avoid sin: so you can have a relationship with God. God wants you to be his partner, so he can guide you to complete your purpose here on Earth.

For you to know God's calling, you have to hear when he is calling you.

It is a wonderful thing when God sets you apart. It means you are about to be great and do great things. It means that your story is about to change for the better. And you keep obeying God's will if you want him to call upon you. You have to be still and know who your God is, why he calls you, and what he wants you to do.

You must not look or behave like those in the world. But keep yourself pure and righteous, and holy. God's calling for your life is to bless you. And you must embrace this with all your heart by being obedient and dedicated go him.
